Shadows of Self by Brandon Sanderson5/23/2023 Lawman Waxillium Ladrian and his partner Lessie are investigating a serial killer in Feltrel, a small town in the Roughs. It also introduces the concept of Twinborn, beings naturally born with one allomantic and one feruchemical ability, for the first time in the series. The Alloy of Law is set in an analog to the early 20th century, on Scadrial, approximately 300 years after the conclusion of the original trilogy. The story features Twinborns, Metalborns who are able to use Allomancy and Feruchemy in conjunction, along with abilities from new metals not present in the original trilogy. It is preceded by The Hero of Ages from the Mistborn Original Trilogy in 2008 and followed by Shadows of Self in 2015. It was published on Novemby Tor Books and is the first book in the Wax and Wayne series and fourth in the Mistborn series. Mistborn: The Alloy of Law is a fantasy novel written by American author Brandon Sanderson.

Circe novel5/22/2023 My mom would take me at least once a month we would go and look at the Greek and Roman collections and the Egyptian collections, as well. Madeline Miller (MM): I was born in Boston, but when I was about a year old, my parents moved to New York City, so I grew up in Manhattan, close enough that we could go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which was a huge part of my upbringing. You can listen to the whole thing, which includes Miller reading two wonderful passages from Circe and her recommendation of related books, here, or by subscribing to Recall This Book on iTunes, or Stitcher, or wherever you listen to podcasts. Below is an edited version of our conversation with her. In planning the first few episodes of Recall This Book (a new podcast partnered with Public Books), we quickly put Miller on the top of our must-interview list. It begins as the story of a few of the women who have crucial parts to play in Odysseus’s rambling, manly road trip, but as the novel goes on, we realize that its “mythological realism” is polyphonic, satirical, and, in the best sense of the word, upsetting. Her 2018 novel, Circe-critically acclaimed and a fixture on the New York Times best-seller list that year-is a sort of Odyssey from the side. Her degrees include a BA and MA in classics from Brown, and her first novel, The Song of Achilles, won the 2012 Orange Prize for Fiction. Madeline Miller is a Boston-born writer who currently lives in Philadelphia. Rot and ruin series5/22/2023 So, Charlie is involved in something in the Rot and Ruin called ‘Gameland’ where they send helpless victims of the apocalypse to battle for their lives with zombies, usually equipped with little more than a crow bar. One in particular is a pedophilic, sexist albino (no, really) called Charlie Pink-Eye. He realizes that things are not always the way they seem, especially when it comes to bounty hunters. To be fair, Benny doesn’t even know Tom, so when he does get to know him through their journey out into the Rot and Ruin, his feelings change. The only problem with this (besides the obvious) is that Benny hates Tom. Benny Imura is looking for a job so that he won’t lose his food rations, and he decides that following his older brother Tom, a zombie bounty hunter, out into the zombie wasteland dubbed the “Rot and Ruin” is the best way to do this. This book takes place a few years after the (inevitable, let’s be real) zombie apocalypse in the settlement of Mountainside. Today we’re talking about Rot & Ruin by Jonathan Maberry, the first installment of a series of books about our main character, fifteen year-old Benny Imura. Good day, Germies! How are you all today? In the mood to chat about some zombies and two brothers on a quest that will re-define them and bring into question their own mortality?! Well then, you’re in luck! Genres: Fiction / Romance / Contemporary, Fiction / Romance / New Adult, Fiction / Romance / Sportsįormat: eBook, Kindle Unlimited, Paperback Puss in Boots by Charles Perrault5/22/2023 This 1949 edition is simple in color and design compared to many earlier illustrators’ interpretations. He patented this design in 1938 as “moving illustrations” and went on to create his first edition of Puss in Boots Animated in 1944. Julien Wehr, an artist and illustrator, designed sliding tabs that allow readers to move and manipulate his drawings. One of the defining features of this edition is its interactive quality. He exists primarily to further the narrative arc of Puss’s wit. This shapeshifting ogre takes on a role similar to the ogre-troll commonly seen in folklore narratives. This pagespread illustrates the climax of the story, in which Puss cleverly tricks the ogre into transforming into a mouse-which he then eats in order to secure the castle for his master. By dressing himself in human clothing, Puss transforms into a human-like character, employing language as a form of deception to help his master acquire a fortune- taking on the roles of a trickster figure and animal helper in a rags-to-riches tale. This 1949 edition closely follows the plotline of Charles Perrault’s The Master Cat (1697). Puss-in-Boots is a well-known trickster fairytale that has been in circulation for hundreds of years, with many different translations and editions. On the right side, the ogre is shown transformed into a mouse, which Puss is now chasing. On the left side of this pagespread, Puss-in-Boots is pictured talking to an ogre in the form of a lion, who is dressed elegantly and sitting on his throne. Twin sisters by janice harrell5/22/2023 It has this weird feeling of being both too rushed, and somehow also very padded out. Since I’d never read it before, the only nostalgia story I have is what I wrote in my Twin Sisters recap, but I was hoping it would be at least as good as the first book. This book is incomprehensible without knowing what happens in the first part, and I’m not going to waste time recapping my previous recap.) (Seriously, if you haven’t read the recap of Twin Sisters, please do so now. The exciting conclusion to Twin Sisters, that I’ve waited over twenty years to read. The christmas cookie club book5/22/2023 I spied this at the bookstore right before Thanksgiving. Everyone has to bring a dish, a bottle of wine, and their stories. The Cookie Clubis about the passion and hopefulness of a new romance, the betrayal and disillusionment some relationships bring, the joys and fears of motherhood, and above all, it's a celebration of the friendships between women. It’s the Christmas Cookie Club Every year on the first Monday of the December, Marnie & twelve of her closest girlfriends gather in the evening with batches of beautifully wrapped homemade cookies. Who else knew about the betrayal? Rosie's husband doesn't want children, but can she live with his decision? Each woman, each friend has a story to tell. Will she find out tonight how that story will end? Jeannie's father is having an affair with her best friend. Marnie's oldest daughter has a risky pregnancy. This year, the stories are especially important. Stories that, somehow, are always emblematic of the year that has just passed. Everyone has to bring a dish and a bottle of wine and, as they eat, they take turns telling the story of the cookies they have baked. Every year on the first Monday of December, Marnie and her twelve closest girlfriends gather with batches of beautifully wrapped homemade cookies. What would we do without one another? It was a statement, not a question.
